Sit for a Story!

Sit for a Story!
Nancy Reiter, Librarian
Home Gardens Library
Corona, CA

Ezra Jack Keats’ books came to life in this creative approach to an author study, culminating in permanent “reading chairs” at the public library!

The Home Gardens Library hosted a 9-week series of free art classes serving children ages 5-12 taught by local volunteer artist, Mark Tsai. Each week Mr. Tsai highlighted a book illustrated by Ezra Jack Keats, taught children about the illustration style and led them in activities to create their own version of Keats’ art style. Featured books included Jennie’s Hat, Louie, The Trip, A Letter to Amy and of course, Peter’s Chair!

The final phase of the project began with the Peter’s Chair program when children designed and painted chairs donated by the library. The final weeks of the program were dedicated to painting the chairs that when completed were placed in the Children’s area of the library for all to use as reading chairs.

“We provided a no-cost art class for local children at the Home Gardens Library.
Using the iconic style of Ezra Jack Keats as inspiration, children had the opportunity to
explore art, books and foster a sense of community by creating a lasting art piece that all
library patrons can enjoy.” – Nancy Reiter
