Hattiesburg, MS/Brooklyn, New York—March 12, 2020—The 2020 Ezra Jack Keats Award Ceremony has been canceled by the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) out of concern over the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The EJK Award is produced in partnership by the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation and the de Grummond Children’s Literature Collection at USM.

The EJK Award Ceremony was to have taken place, as part of the Fay B. Kaigler Children’s Book Festival at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, on Thursday, April 2. The Foundation believes the administration of USM made a wise, though difficult, decision to protect the students, staff and administration of the school, as well as those who were to attend the festival and award ceremony.

Nevertheless, the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation is heartbroken not to be able to celebrate the fine authors and illustrators who are this year’s Ezra Jack Keats Award winners and honorees. Deborah Pope, Executive Director of the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation said, “It’s a tremendous loss for us not to come together to roll out the red carpet for these extraordinary authors and illustrators in person. And so, we’ll just have to find another way to celebrate!”

Ellen Ruffin, Curator of the de Grummond Children’s Literature Collection, added, “This is the first time in 53 years that the Kaigler Children’s Book Festival has been canceled. We’re very sad that the immediate joy of the festival is lost this year. We’ll look forward to a special reunion next year.”
