Imagination in the Arts

Nettie Moore, Youth Specialist
M.R. Davis Public Library
Beaver Lake Education Center
Southaven, Mississippi

The program was a series of evening workshops to benefit children with autism and their families. The M.R. Davis Library asked families without autism to join as well, and created a space where both groups would feel comfortable. There was much to overcome in the way of confidence and social skills, but everyone was willing to listen and learn about one another.

Eight Art Nights were each based on an Ezra Jack Keats book, with reading and discussion and an art project taught by a volunteer artist. Nine Builder’s Nights gave kids, and many dads, a chance to bond and socialize. While the children made art and built Lego structures, they were breaking down barriers, sharing interests and forming lasting friendships.
