Tales of Our Forefathers

Susan Gerhart, YA Librarian
Calcasieu Parish Public Library
Summer Teen Reading Program
Lake Charles, Louisiana

A summer reading project grew into a living history at the Central Library in Lake Charles, Louisiana, when nine teens interviewed older members of their families and community. These were people who survived the Great Depression, fought in the Second World War and lived through many social and economic changes in the rural South. Their words and photographs make up a wonderful album of reminiscences, and much more: they are a vivid record of 20th-century life in Calcasieu Parish.
