Mosaic Legacy Project

Robert Devich, Principal
Pacific Rim Elementary School
Carlsbad, California

The fifth-graders at Pacific Rim Elementary had a mission: Design and execute a 36-by-24-foot mosaic to hang outside the school library. A visiting artist helped the students with the design, inspired by the book Rainbow Fish, by Marcus Pfister. With a brigade of kindergarteners and first- and second-graders to help, the project was completed in a matter of weeks. This was a goal-oriented program for younger and older kids, parent volunteers and teachers to work collaboratively to produce a piece of public art.
